What to know about American stations
Staffed and unstaffed are different products. A staffed station has an agent, checked baggage, a waiting room and usually ramp or lift boarding. An unstaffed halt may be a platform and a shelter with no ticketing and no baggage service. That distinction matters enormously if you have heavy luggage or mobility needs, and it is not always obvious online.
Arrive earlier than you think at the big hubs. Washington Union Station boards by gate rather than by track, and queues at Gates A and B build fast. New York's Amtrak departures now leave from Moynihan Train Hall across Eighth Avenue, and track assignments frequently appear less than ten minutes before departure.
Some stations are genuine destinations. Chicago Union Station, Kansas City Union Station, Los Angeles Union Station, Washington Union Station and Philadelphia 30th Street are among the finest public buildings in America. If your connection is long, that is not a problem — it is an opportunity.
