The flight is shorter. The journey often is not.
Airlines quote gate-to-gate. Nobody actually travels gate to gate. Here is the arithmetic that matters, including the routes where flying still wins.
Realistic total journey times
| City pair | By air (door to door) | By train | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York → Washington DC | ~4h 30m | 2h 55m | Train |
| New York → Boston | ~4h 15m | 3h 40m | Train |
| London → Paris | ~5h 00m | 2h 16m | Train |
| London → Manchester | ~4h 00m | 2h 07m | Train |
| London → Edinburgh | ~4h 45m | 4h 20m | Train |
| Chicago → Milwaukee | ~3h 15m | 1h 29m | Train |
| Los Angeles → San Diego | ~3h 30m | 2h 50m | Close |
| New York → Miami | ~6h 00m | 27h 30m | Plane |
| Chicago → Los Angeles | ~7h 00m | 43h | Plane |
Air figures assume 45 minutes to the airport, 60 minutes for check-in and security, 25 minutes taxiing, 20 minutes deplaning and 45 minutes from the destination airport into the city centre. Actual times vary substantially by airport, time of day and season.
What the timetable does not capture
Luggage costs nothing
Two bags plus two personal items free, no weight fee, no gate-checking, no oversize charge for skis, bikes or golf clubs.
Three usable working hours
A table, power, Wi-Fi and no seatbelt sign. Business travelers on the Northeast Corridor treat the train as a mobile office.
Failure modes are gentler
A delayed train is fifteen minutes late. A delayed flight can be a three-hour tarmac hold followed by a cancellation and a hotel queue.
Far lower emissions
Intercity rail produces a small fraction of the carbon per passenger-mile of a short-haul flight, particularly on electrified corridors.
You arrive downtown
Penn Station, Union Station, King's Cross, Waverley — all in the centre. No $60 taxi from an airport built in a field.
When flying still wins
Beyond roughly 500 miles with no high-speed alternative. We will tell you when that is your situation rather than sell you 43 hours you do not want.
The overnight case
There is a third category that the door-to-door table misses entirely: journeys where the train replaces both the flight and the hotel night. New York to Miami takes 27 hours by rail, which looks absurd next to a three-hour flight — until you count that you slept, ate four meals, kept your luggage and did not spend a night in a hotel at either end.
The Caledonian Sleeper from London to Fort William, the Auto Train from Virginia to Florida, and the City of New Orleans from Chicago to the Delta all work on this logic. They are not slower ways to fly. They are a different product.
On the call, we will price the flight-plus-hotel construction against the sleeper construction for you. Sometimes the train wins outright on cost as well as experience. Sometimes it does not, and we will say so.
