How to Book UK Trains From the United States

Railcards, Advance fares, split tickets, e-tickets vs collection codes — the American traveler's guide to British rail.

The 12-week rule

UK Advance fares are released roughly twelve weeks before departure, and the cheapest tier often sells out within days on popular routes. If you are planning six months ahead, the honest answer is that you cannot book yet — and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a flexible fare at four times the price.

Railcards worth having

  • Two Together Railcard — for a named pair travelling together, 1/3 off
  • Senior Railcard — 60 and over, 1/3 off
  • Family & Friends — up to 4 adults and 4 children
  • 16–25 and 26–30 Railcards for younger travelers
  • Most pay for themselves on a single long journey

Tickets that actually work

E-tickets are now standard on most operators and can be shown on a phone. Some fares still issue as a collection code requiring a station machine and the original payment card — a genuine problem if you are arriving on a red-eye at 6am. We only issue e-tickets to overseas travelers unless there is no alternative, and we tell you clearly when there is not.

Reservations and open tickets

Advance fares are tied to a specific train. Off-Peak and Anytime tickets are not, which is worth paying for if your inbound flight might be late. Seat reservations are free and separate from the ticket on most operators — always take one on long journeys.
